How important is a nighttime skincare routine? Short answer: VERY!

Your nighttime skincare routine actually serves a completely different function than your morning routine. Each morning, you are prepping your skin to protect itself from any free radicals that you’ll encounter throughout the day, including your makeup, air pollution, dirt, bacteria and more.  A gentle cleanser, toner and moisturizer with SPF should do the trick!

Before you go to bed, your main goal is to make sure your skin is completely clean and help it repair itself overnight. It’s super important to use the right products, but when it’s late and your bed is calling your name, it’s so easy to “forget” to give your skin some TLC.

We’ve simplified the process to just the absolute essentials, so your skin will get the attention it needs every night in just 5 minutes!

Step 1: Double Cleanser

Always remember to start with a makeup remover! Your makeup not only clogs your pores, but throughout the day, it collects lots of bacteria and dirt. Our Chamomile & Green Tea Makeup Remover has a unique gel consistency and is gentle enough for all skin types.

Follow with a cleanser that suits your skin type. For those with dry skin, we recommend an oil-based cleanser like our best-selling ADE Creamy Fruit Oil Cleanser (this one can actually double as a makeup remover). If you have oily skin to normal skin, we recommend our Clarifying Facial Wash.

Step 2: Toner

Use a cotton ball to wipe our Aloe Vera Toner all over your face and neck. Toners will remove every last trace of dirt, makeup and other impurities. Add our Clarifying Herbal Astringent to your routine if you need to dry out excess oil.

Step 3: Serum

Rub a few drops of your favorite serum for some anti-aging benefits. Our Hyaluronic Acid Serum and Cellagen Renewal Serum are great for all skin types and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles!

Step 4: Moisturizer

Finish off with your favorite moisturizer! Our Perfect Hydration Oil-Free Moisturizer is the best lightweight lotion for oily and combination skin types. Fragrance Free Almond-Aloe is a mediumweight moisturizer for all skin types, or try our Apricot Night Cream if you have very dry skin.

Extras

Once or twice a week, you can also add in an exfoliator like our Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub and a chemical peel like our Papaya-Glycolic Radiant Skin Masque. Using an exfoliator will slough off any dead skin cells that are building up on your skin’s surface, and reveal smoother, brighter skin.

(If you have ultra-sensitive skin, try several of the products above in their Fragrance Free versions!)

Bonus tip: Switch out your pillowcase every week. Your pillow collects tons of dead skin cells and bacteria each night, so switching out your pillowcase frequently is an absolute must!

It’s been a hot summer so far, and the dog days are still upon us!

Do you know what the dog days of summer actually are? We love dogs (especially those rescued by the incredible humans over at Best Friends Animal Society), but the dog days of summer historically reference the period from July to August in which Sirius, the Dog Star, occupies the same region of the sky as our sun. Although the Romans believed differently, it has no effect on the planet’s temperature and no connection to the oppressive heat the summer months bring. Still, to help keep your cool through the home stretch, consider these skincare survival tips:

Do a deep clean. Switch out your daily cleanser for something with a little more kick to combat sweat and grime, like our Clarifying Facial Wash with vitamins, antioxidants and antibacterial agents like birch bark, rosemary and grapefruit extracts. For sensitive skin, we make a fragrance-free version too.

Stay out of the sun. We know, we know—impossible. Your best bet is to always use sun protection. While a wide-brimmed hat trumps everything, a layer of SPF is also imperative. Our Almond-Aloe Moisturizer SPF 15 offers silky, light, all-over protection for outside time around your busy life.

Go naked. On your face! Less is always more during the summer, during which dirt, sweat and pollution are likely to combine with your foundation or BB cream in more humid climates. So, forget looking flawless and let your natural glow carry you. The more often you go without makeup, the more your pores will thank you!

If you have to wear it for a special occasion, go with a non-greasy remover like Chamomile & Green Tea Eye Makeup Remover for an easy, gentle rinse-off.

Exfoliate—sometimes, but not all the time. Removing dead skin cells is key to keeping skin fresh and clear, but too much removal can lead to sun sensitivity. Cut back to one night per week during the hot summer months with a gentle fruit acid serum like Fruit Actives Perfecting Lotion. If you accidentally find yourself a little too sun-kissed, Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub can slough away flaking skin on face or body once the burn has healed.

Have a cold one. Skip the hot shower! Try to tolerate a cooler temperature while bathing so as not to strip your skin of its oils. Before drying off completely, moisturize while skin is still damp. A body lotion like our Multi-Therapy Ceramide Healthy Skin Lotion will create a nourishing layer that locks in moisture to keep skin hydrated. To restore moisture on your face, try Healthy Skin Ceramide Facial Lotion.

Eat your H2O. In addition to drinking plenty of water daily (shoot for half your weight in ounces), snacking on fruits and veggies with high water content is a great way to naturally support hydration—inside and out! The following fruits and veggies are made of more than 90 percent water, so add them to your grocery list:

  • Grapefruit, strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe
  • Cucumber, zucchini, celery and radishes
  • Spinach and cabbage
  • Sweet peppers and tomatoes

To really boost moisture for plumper, smoother skin, apply Maximum Hydration Hyaluronic Acid Serum morning and night. This essential element in human skin can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, so skin won’t feel parched.
