PrintWe all want effective skincare products that deliver the results that they promise. But for some of us, choosing products that are safe and healthy is of equal importance. Earth Science Naturals prides itself on creating clean products made from the finest natural ingredients and free of ingredients like parabens, artificial colors and artificial fragrances.

In fact, Earth Sciences Naturals’ formulas are so clean that several products have recently been approved as Premium Body Care products at Whole Foods Market (with more to come), which strives to provide its customers with truth in labeling, safer, more natural skincare products. It’s not just a nice label, though – in order to be approved as part of Whole Foods’ premium care offerings, products must meet stringent standards to ensure the highest quality.

Whole Foods’ standards cover four main areas:

1)     Results — Products that earn the premium care label must contain effective ingredients that function well and provide genuine results.

2)     Source — To guarantee that products are truly natural, they must also meet strict standards that ensure their ingredients are sourced as closely to nature as possible and minimally processed afterward.

3)     Environmental Impact — Whole Foods also considers the impact that personal care products have on the environment since many are washed down the drain where they can then enter our ground and surface waters. To meet the environmental impact standard, products must have little negative effect on the environment during both the manufacturing process and when they are released into the environment during use.

4)     Safety — Whole Foods pays particular concern to how safe the ingredients that products contain are for our bodies. As such, the products must have accurate ingredient lists; have little contamination risk; be less likely to cause allergic reactions and irritations; and have established safety data. This means that premium body care products don’t contain parabens, and only contain mild preservatives and natural fragrances.

Clearly, meeting these standards is no small feat and definitely attests to a product’s clean formula.  That’s why Earth Science Naturals is so proud of the first of many products approved as Whole Foods Premium Body Care products.  The five include the Azulene Eye Cream, Active Age Defense i-Cream, Active Age Defense Cellagen, Multi-Therapy Ceramide Healthy Skin Lotion, and Purfection Hand Cream. Knowing what stringent criteria these products meet, you can absolutely feel good about incorporating them in your personal care routine.

VitaminE Stock FBWhen it comes to skincare products, choosing ingredients that can multitask is a surefire way to get more bang for your buck. Meet vitamin E, a powerhouse antioxidant that has long been used to soothe and heal the skin.

Because it provides a host of benefits that nearly any type of skin can enjoy, it is included in many of Earth Science Naturals’ products. You might have to scan the ingredient lists and look for a few different names, though, since vitamin E comes in several forms, including tocopherol, tochopheryl acetate, and tocopheryl linoleate.

As an antioxidant, vitamin E helps combat damage from free radicals like pollution, which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also an ideal ingredient that can help soothe dry skin, boosting the moisture content and softening for improved elasticity. Vitamin E may also have anti-inflammatory properties that allow it to heal the skin. It can even absorb some UV rays to provide slight sun protection.

Is that multitasking or what?

If you’re interested in introducing this powerful antioxidant into your skincare routine, you can find many options in the Earth Science Naturals’ line. The A-D-E Creamy Cleanser, Apricot Night Cream, Hydrating Day Cream, and Nighttime Recovery Cream are just a few of the great products that allow you to incorporate Vitamin E in your skincare regime.

ginsium C blog image 1000pxI was recently asked about one of our lesser-known products, Ginsium-C (full name, Active Age Defense Ginsium-C Skin Lightening Cream). Where does the name “Ginsium-C” come from? Does this cream really work? Ginsium-C happens to be one of my personal favorites, so of course I was eager to share this information. Now, let me tell you a little bit about it.

Ginsium-C is a play on words that uses a clever combination of some of the active ingredients in the formula: ginseng and, more importantly, vitamin C. Ginseng soothes and firms the skin while vitamin C helps to diminish the appearance of dark spots. There are a couple different types of vitamin C in this formula, ascorbic acid and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Both help to inhibit the production of melanin (too much melanin causes dark spots), work as anti-oxidants and may promote the synthesis of collagen in the skin. Ginsium-C also contains the key ingredient licorice root extract, which can soothe sensitive skin and add additional skin brightening and lightening benefits.

Ginsium-C is actually a very unique product, in that it can be used on the face, hands, arms or other area that has dark spots in need of lightening. Because it does not contain bleach, it works gradually to improve the skin. Follow these tips to get the best results when using this cream:

1.         Apply twice a day.

If you wash and tone your face, apply Ginsium-C directly after. Apply morning and evening before bed.

2.         Apply directly to skin.

You may apply another cream on top of Ginsium-C if needed, but not underneath.

3.         Always use sun protection with this product.

Ginsium-C works by blocking the new production of melanin, so the existing (dark spots) must be lost in the normal 28-day cycle of skin cell turnover. Make sure to wear a hat, appropriate clothing and sunblock to protect the skin and enjoy the results of this excellent product.

It turns out there is quite a bit in this product’s name!

glutenfree symbol FBWe receive a lot of inquiries about gluten in our products.  This prompted us to ask the question, does gluten in personal care products pose a problem to those with a gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease?  Read on to find out.

Current scientific research considers products formulated with gluten safe for use by those with Celiac Disease or gluten sensitivity.  Michael F. Picco, M.D, a gastroenterologist with the Mayo Clinic asserts, “Gluten-containing skin care products and cosmetics aren’t a problem unless you accidentally swallow them. For this reason, avoid using such products on your lips or around your mouth.” He goes on to say that even a skin reaction to gluten (dermatitis herpetiformis or DH) would be caused by the ingestion of gluten, not by the topical use. (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/AN01623)

Dr. Alessio Fasano, Medical Director of the Center for Celiac Research, University of Maryland, has found that “…the application of gluten containing products to the skin should not be a problem, unless you have skin lesions that allow gluten to be absorbed systemically in large quantities.” (http://www.glutenfreedietitian.com/newsletter/personal-care-products-do-you-need-to-worry-about-gluten/)

Notwithstanding these findings from the medical community, there appear to be gluten sensitive people who say they are reacting to gluten in topical application. (http://celiacdisease.about.com/od/GlutenFreePersonalCareProducts/a/Gluten- In-Shampoo.htm).

It appears from the scientific evidence that most gluten sensitive consumers do not need to be concerned about gluten in personal care products, but some might still want to exercise caution.  For this reason, we will provide specific information on our website calling out “gluten-free” products for those who wish to avoid them.  http://earthsciencenaturals.com/index.php?1&p=view_category&search_text=gluten-free&sort_by=price%20DESC

Ceramide LotionProtect…Soothe…Heal…

What are Ceramides and What Do They Do?

Ceramides are lipid molecules (fatty acids) that are found in high concentrations in the membrane of skin cells.  Ceramides serve many important roles in the skin, including regulating the differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis (death) of cells.  They are also essential components of the stratum corneum.  The stratum corneum is the primary barrier of the skin.  It has protective functions including keeping foreign substances out of the body, and keeping water (moisture) in.  The stratum corneum contains three types of lipids: ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids that together form glycophospholipids.  Healthy skin has the right balance and proportion of these lipids.

Why are Ceramides Important?

Studies show that dry and damaged skin is often linked to a reduction in ceramide levels in the skin.  Reduced ceramide levels make it difficult for the skin to retain moisture.  It has also been established that sufferers of certain skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis have reduced or imbalanced ceramide levels.  The successful healing effects of ceramides have been found in studies of eczema and psoriasis.

How Ceramide Healthy Skin Lotion Really Works

Ceramide Healthy Skin Lotion contains plant ceramides, lecithin and essential fatty acids that together create the glycophospholipids that help to restore skin to its optimum state.  With regular use it can improve the skin’s moisture-retaining capacity, actually returning the skin to a healthier condition.  It also contains other important ingredients that contribute to the effectiveness and wonderful texture of the formula, including shea butter (a rich moisturizer) and hemp oil, which has been shown to stimulate ceramide production in the skin.
