So much of an eco-conscious lifestyle isn’t just about using products with natural ingredients—it’s also about supporting the health of our natural resources. The ocean provides food, medicine, energy, transportation and recreation; most importantly, it produces the oxygen we breath and helps regulate our climate. But, overall, humans are doing a poor job of stewarding it. Join us in helping to save the ocean:

1) Skip the Straw

At the rate trash enters the ocean, it could be less than 10 years before the ocean contains a pound of plastic for every three pounds of fish swimming in it. Say no to single-use plastics that contaminate and kill wildlife, starting with drinking straws. Other single-use plastics that can easily be eliminated and swapped for reusable replacements are water bottles, utensils and grocery bags.

The Earth Science Team on Coastal Cleanup Day2) Take it With You

Help decrease plastic in the environment by pledging to pick up trash whenever you see it, whether at the beach, on the sidewalk, or in a park. You can also join a community beach, stream or highway cleanup with friends, family or coworkers! Our Earth Science team spent International Coastal Cleanup Day, Sept. 15, cleaning up a local beach in Santa Barbara.

3) Eat Sustainably

Overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices lead to pollution, disease and destruction of coastal ecosystems. Try limiting seafood or eliminating it from your diet altogether. At the least, visit SeafoodWatch.org to learn the environmental impact of our seafood choices. Next time you visit the seafood counter, consider what species—and how much of it—you’re buying as well as its origins.

4) Watch What You Wash Down the Drain

Parabens are great for extending the shelf life of beauty products, but you won’t find them in anything we make. In fact, Earth Science has never used them since its founding 37 years ago. Research shows parabens are hormone disruptors that can penetrate our skin and remain within our tissue, but studies have found they also enter our waterways and end up in the bodies of marine life—from dolphins to sea otters to polar bears. Choose eco-friendly personal care, beauty and cleaning products, and you’ll benefit the health of yourself and the environment.

5) Support Environmental Advocacy

Consider volunteering your time or donating money to a Charity Navigator-rated organization focused on ocean health. Or, shop for good with Earth Science—this month we’re donating 1% of net sales to Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit advocacy group fighting for science-based policy change to protect the ocean. The start of a new school year is here! For skin that’s fresh for fall, keep your skincare routine simple: Exfoliate. Cleanse. Tone. Moisturize.

1) Exfoliator

Start your year—and every day—refreshed. Best-selling Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub is kind enough on skin for daily use. In the morning, a small amount helps slough away dead skin cells from overnight cell turnover. With apricot kernel oil, walnut shell powder and oat kernel flour to reveal soft, smooth skin.

2) Cleanser

Our daily cleansers for oily and dry skin types are head of the class. Clarifying Facial Wash combats oil without drying, thanks to soothing aloe vera and extracts of cucumber, sea kelp, birch bark and lavender. Creamy Fruit Oil Cleanser removes makeup and moisturizes as it cleans with avocado, apricot kernel and sweet almond oils rich in vitamin E.

3) Toner

In our book, moisturizer prep is just as important as exam prep! Aloe Vera Complexion Toner & Freshener eliminates leftover dirt and makeup while cooling, hydrating and revitalizing skin—all without alcohol, a common ingredient in toner that actually dries skin. For combination/oily types, Clarifying Herbal Astringent gently removes soap residue and dead skin with sulfur and zinc for added oil reduction.

4) Moisturizer

Oil-free, fragrance-free, with SPF, ceramide-enriched, you name it—our variety of facial moisturizers will help you face a new school year, no matter your skin type. Every Earth Science moisturizer or cream is packed with hyaluronic acid, a natural moisturizing component of human skin that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Superior at maintaining skin’s hydration, elasticity and suppleness, ours is sourced from cultured sugar beets or other vegetable sources (never from animals!).

And, there you have it. Clean slate, clean skin!

It’s been a hot summer so far, and the dog days are still upon us!

Do you know what the dog days of summer actually are? We love dogs (especially those rescued by the incredible humans over at Best Friends Animal Society), but the dog days of summer historically reference the period from July to August in which Sirius, the Dog Star, occupies the same region of the sky as our sun. Although the Romans believed differently, it has no effect on the planet’s temperature and no connection to the oppressive heat the summer months bring. Still, to help keep your cool through the home stretch, consider these skincare survival tips:

Do a deep clean. Switch out your daily cleanser for something with a little more kick to combat sweat and grime, like our Clarifying Facial Wash with vitamins, antioxidants and antibacterial agents like birch bark, rosemary and grapefruit extracts. For sensitive skin, we make a fragrance-free version too.

Stay out of the sun. We know, we know—impossible. Your best bet is to always use sun protection. While a wide-brimmed hat trumps everything, a layer of SPF is also imperative. Our Almond-Aloe Moisturizer SPF 15 offers silky, light, all-over protection for outside time around your busy life.

Go naked. On your face! Less is always more during the summer, during which dirt, sweat and pollution are likely to combine with your foundation or BB cream in more humid climates. So, forget looking flawless and let your natural glow carry you. The more often you go without makeup, the more your pores will thank you!

If you have to wear it for a special occasion, go with a non-greasy remover like Chamomile & Green Tea Eye Makeup Remover for an easy, gentle rinse-off.

Exfoliate—sometimes, but not all the time. Removing dead skin cells is key to keeping skin fresh and clear, but too much removal can lead to sun sensitivity. Cut back to one night per week during the hot summer months with a gentle fruit acid serum like Fruit Actives Perfecting Lotion. If you accidentally find yourself a little too sun-kissed, Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub can slough away flaking skin on face or body once the burn has healed.

Have a cold one. Skip the hot shower! Try to tolerate a cooler temperature while bathing so as not to strip your skin of its oils. Before drying off completely, moisturize while skin is still damp. A body lotion like our Multi-Therapy Ceramide Healthy Skin Lotion will create a nourishing layer that locks in moisture to keep skin hydrated. To restore moisture on your face, try Healthy Skin Ceramide Facial Lotion.

Eat your H2O. In addition to drinking plenty of water daily (shoot for half your weight in ounces), snacking on fruits and veggies with high water content is a great way to naturally support hydration—inside and out! The following fruits and veggies are made of more than 90 percent water, so add them to your grocery list:

  • Grapefruit, strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe
  • Cucumber, zucchini, celery and radishes
  • Spinach and cabbage
  • Sweet peppers and tomatoes

To really boost moisture for plumper, smoother skin, apply Maximum Hydration Hyaluronic Acid Serum morning and night. This essential element in human skin can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, so skin won’t feel parched.

Grown daughter kisses her mother on the cheek in a cafe. It’s pretty often that we’re reminded Mom was right. About (mostly) everything. To celebrate Mother’s Day, we’re sharing our five favorite beauty tips from Mom that were probably annoying at some point but are now—let’s face it—total truth. Thanks, moms!

1) Never go to sleep with makeup on

Makeup holds onto dirt and pollution. Not only does wearing it to bed contribute to breakouts and early aging, it stains our sheets! A gentle eye makeup remover like Chamomile & Green Tea Eye Makeup Remover does the hard work without irritating skin or sacrificing lashes, leaving nothing behind but room for pores to breathe.

2) Schedule time for “me” time

When we take the time to practice self-care, we can actually return to our work with an improved focus. Whatever it is that mentally or physically slows you down—journaling, meditating, flowing through a few sun salutations, or soaking in the tub with our Papaya Glycolic Radiant Skin Masque on—do that thing daily. That way, it becomes part of a routine, not a luxury or something to squeeze into your schedule.

3) Don’t wash your hair every day

Washing hair daily can actually strip locks of their natural oils, leading to dry, brittle strands—especially for coarse or curly hair types and processed hair. Try washing every other day or every three days. (This is where that wide-brimmed hat doubles in function!) To further strengthen and nourish hair, follow up after washing with a deep conditioning treatment like Olive & Avocado Hair Masque.

4) Have fun in the sun, but protect your skin

From lathering us in sunblock when we were kiddos to donning their fabulous wide-brimmed hats, moms know best. Sun damage is a significant precursor of skin cancer, not to mention a contributor of premature aging. For an everyday moisturizer with added SPF boost, our Almond-Aloe Moisturizer with SPF 15 is just the thing to hydrate the face and help protect it from UVB and UVA rays—without any harmful chemicals.

5) Get plenty of rest

They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing! Our skin cells turn over most rapidly at night, peaking around 2 am. The sooner we get to sleep at night, the faster our skin cells regenerate so skin can repair itself. Easier said than done, right? We try to be realistic. So thankfully, for mornings after long nights, there’s Azulene Eye Cream to combat puffiness and stubborn dark circles.

Around here, Earth Day is every day. But on April 22, all of us at Earth Science celebrate our favorite holiday by coming together, raising awareness and showing appreciation for our planet. (We also celebrate with 25% off our earth-friendly products!)

We see ourselves as stewards of a better world, so we try to fuse social and environmental responsibility into the core of our business. When you purchase Earth Science products, your actions support:

Our commitment to clean.

In all of its 35+ years, ever since the development of its storied apricot facial scrub, Earth Science has been a 100% paraben-free brand. We’ve always believed that parabens have no place on your face (or body, or hair!). And you’ll find zero aluminum, alum or zirconium salts in our plant-based lichen deodorants—just odor-preventing botanicals and anti-bacterial extracts.

Our respect for recycling.

We diligently choose American-made, sustainable packaging whenever we can—including up to 80% post-consumer—and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified cartons, which are sourced from sustainably managed forests to protect wildlife habitat and maintain biodiversity. For shipping Earth Science products, we only purchase eco-friendly, biodegradable materials, like packing peanuts made from cornstarch that are 100% compostable (and 100% anti-static, because how annoying is the Styrofoam version?).

Our promise to the planet.

Our products are manufactured locally in Southern California, using sustainably sourced raw materials. As a Carbon Fund partner for more than 10 years, we are also dedicated to supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the fight against climate change by supporting climate-friendly projects. Our offices are open four days a week, eliminating one commute day and reducing an estimated 12,300 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. By sharing the common goal of fighting climate change, we can be a part of the solution toward a clean energy, low carbon future.

CeramedxNo matter where you live, the new year has brought with it a rude awakening: Hello, winter skin! With a record-breaking cold outbreak across the United States at the start of January (Even snow in Florida?!), the fight against dry, rough skin is in full Arctic force.

If you have damaged, dry skin, there could be a reduction in its level of ceramides, or fatty acids that help keep the skin barrier resilient. Reduced ceramide levels can make retaining moisture difficult, which is why we’ve begun to include them in some of our products. We even developed a new therapeutic skincare system now available for very dry, sensitive skin: Ceramedx®. Dermatologist recommended and formulated with plant-based ingredients, it’s the first natural ceramide therapy of its kind!

Try these ceramide-rich solutions for the most common winter skin problems, as well as other tips to bring the moisture back to your life:

1. Itchy, Tight Skin

While a steamy shower in the dead of winter might feel amazing, prolonged exposure to hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and dry it out even more. Try adjusting the knob to lukewarm, which will also keep you from lingering longer than necessary. Don’t skip body lotion—and make sure to apply it directly after bathing for maximum hydration. Ceramedx® Restoring Body Lotion absorbs cleanly, leaving skin soft and without any greasy residue. For dry body or face patches, use a sulfate-free creamy cleanser like Ceramedx® Extra Gentle Cleanser.

2. Staticky Hair

Could there be anything more annoying? First, revitalize your hair with a ceramide shampoo. Formulated for multiple hair types, our Ceramide Care® Collection repairs the hair cuticle, restoring moisture from within for softer, smoother hair. Also try incorporating a nourishing masque like our Olive & Avocado Deep Conditioning Hair Masque, even as your daily conditioner. Don’t knock the humidifier, either. Staticky hair happens when your strands pick up an electrical charge from the dry air. A humidifier will add moisture to the air for your locks, and your skin will love it, too.

3. Hard, Cracked Heels

If your heels are sensitive to the touch or sticking to your socks, it’s time to give them some attention. Before bed, massage a thick moisturizing cream into your heels—even better if it includes ceramides, like Ceramedx® Ultra Moisturizing Cream. For best results, pull on a pair of cozy socks to lock in moisture and leave them on overnight. Repeat for a few nights in a row or until heels soften!

4. Flaky Face

Yikes! The key to banishing dry facial skin is incorporating a gentle exfoliant and a rich moisturizer into your regimen. Try our Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub, light enough for daily use, and switch out your oil-free facial lotion for a heavier one like our Hydrating Day Cream for a smooth, luminous finish.

5. Dry, Chapped Hands

Our hands work so hard for us. The best way to care for them is by always having a bottle of hand cream within reach—at the office, by your bed and in your bag. Our Purfection® Hand Cream also comes in a 2-oz. size, perfect for on-the-go skin softening. Slather on hand cream after washing hands, and don’t forget to keep a pair of gloves in your coat pockets to protect hands from the elements!

For a whole-body approach, make sure to hydrate from within. Even though we don’t sweat as much during the winter, we still lose a substantial amount of water daily. At a minimum, make sure to drink at least eight cups per day to keep your body operating at its best.

One bottle each of Earth Science's Green Tea & Chamomile Eye Makeup Remover (4 oz) and Herbal Tonic Mist (8 oz), displayed next to two freshly cut fennel bulbs.

Fennel doesn’t get enough love in our opinion, so we’re giving this plant lots of it on the blog this November! Fall isn’t just for cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice everything. It’s also the beginning of fennel season, and its airy yellow tops are covering the coastal bluffs near Earth Science’s southern California office.

An herb with family members like dill, caraway, cumin and anise, fennel has long been used in recipes for everything from baked sweets to marinades, soups and sauces, using both its stalks in some dishes as well as its seeds to spice up others.

Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) fruit extract is an ingredient in our gentle eye makeup remover and refreshing Herbal Tonic Mist. But what’s fennel fruit, you ask? The small pieces of the plant, commonly called fennel seeds, which are actually its dried fruits.

We’ve selected fennel fruit extract as one of Earth Science’s skincare ingredients because of its wonderful anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties. It has the ability to soothe and moisturize dry or irritated skin conditions, making it a perfect addition to these paraben-free, cruelty-free and vegan products:

  • Our fragrance-free Chamomile & Green Tea Makeup Remover also features fennel fruit, bilberry and eyebright extracts. This effective herbal formula purifies and refreshes skin while removing makeup. Non-irritating, no artificial colors and no oily residue!
  • Our ultra-pure Herbal Tonic Mist freshens, cools and energizes skin with fennel fruit extract as well as those of raspberry leaf, aloe vera, calendula, sea kelp, chamomile and comfrey. Special “ultra-moisturizers” such as panthenol and hyaluronic acid hydrate and improve skin’s appearance and protect it from the drying effects of the sun.

With a light anise flavor, this herb is also a tasty addition to salads and casseroles. Discover some of these fennel-filled recipes for serving at your dinner table on Thanksgiving:

Our hearts have been heavy for all those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. While the end of the 2017 hurricane season is nearing, we know recovery efforts in the path of their destruction will continue to go on for months.

At Earth Science, we try to fuse social and environmental responsibility into the core of our business. In considering how we could help hurricane victims as they begin to rebuild their lives, we decided to partner with Good360, a global leader in product philanthropy and purposeful giving. Good360 works with recovery agencies and nonprofits to determine exactly what families and individuals need and then provides them with products donated by companies. They’re helping us deliver $100,000 worth of basic essential hygiene items—shampoo and conditioner—to the people of southern Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irma!

If you’re an animal lover, another great organization to have on your radar is Best Friends Animal Society. We’ve also committed to support our friends at this nonprofit in their disaster response efforts, which have been phenomenal! Their work in Texas and Florida has included rescuing stranded animals, helping reunite families with lost pets, delivering supplies to hard-hit animal shelters, and transporting displaced shelter pets. In Texas alone, they’ve already helped more than 1,600 animals in the Houston area and served more than 10,000 pounds of food to hungry pets.

Our thoughts remain with the communities impacted by these disasters. We invite you to join us in our commitment to helping them as they recover and rebuild.
