CeramedxNo matter where you live, the new year has brought with it a rude awakening: Hello, winter skin! With a record-breaking cold outbreak across the United States at the start of January (Even snow in Florida?!), the fight against dry, rough skin is in full Arctic force.

If you have damaged, dry skin, there could be a reduction in its level of ceramides, or fatty acids that help keep the skin barrier resilient. Reduced ceramide levels can make retaining moisture difficult, which is why we’ve begun to include them in some of our products. We even developed a new therapeutic skincare system now available for very dry, sensitive skin: Ceramedx®. Dermatologist recommended and formulated with plant-based ingredients, it’s the first natural ceramide therapy of its kind!

Try these ceramide-rich solutions for the most common winter skin problems, as well as other tips to bring the moisture back to your life:

1. Itchy, Tight Skin

While a steamy shower in the dead of winter might feel amazing, prolonged exposure to hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and dry it out even more. Try adjusting the knob to lukewarm, which will also keep you from lingering longer than necessary. Don’t skip body lotion—and make sure to apply it directly after bathing for maximum hydration. Ceramedx® Restoring Body Lotion absorbs cleanly, leaving skin soft and without any greasy residue. For dry body or face patches, use a sulfate-free creamy cleanser like Ceramedx® Extra Gentle Cleanser.

2. Staticky Hair

Could there be anything more annoying? First, revitalize your hair with a ceramide shampoo. Formulated for multiple hair types, our Ceramide Care® Collection repairs the hair cuticle, restoring moisture from within for softer, smoother hair. Also try incorporating a nourishing masque like our Olive & Avocado Deep Conditioning Hair Masque, even as your daily conditioner. Don’t knock the humidifier, either. Staticky hair happens when your strands pick up an electrical charge from the dry air. A humidifier will add moisture to the air for your locks, and your skin will love it, too.

3. Hard, Cracked Heels

If your heels are sensitive to the touch or sticking to your socks, it’s time to give them some attention. Before bed, massage a thick moisturizing cream into your heels—even better if it includes ceramides, like Ceramedx® Ultra Moisturizing Cream. For best results, pull on a pair of cozy socks to lock in moisture and leave them on overnight. Repeat for a few nights in a row or until heels soften!

4. Flaky Face

Yikes! The key to banishing dry facial skin is incorporating a gentle exfoliant and a rich moisturizer into your regimen. Try our Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub, light enough for daily use, and switch out your oil-free facial lotion for a heavier one like our Hydrating Day Cream for a smooth, luminous finish.

5. Dry, Chapped Hands

Our hands work so hard for us. The best way to care for them is by always having a bottle of hand cream within reach—at the office, by your bed and in your bag. Our Purfection® Hand Cream also comes in a 2-oz. size, perfect for on-the-go skin softening. Slather on hand cream after washing hands, and don’t forget to keep a pair of gloves in your coat pockets to protect hands from the elements!

For a whole-body approach, make sure to hydrate from within. Even though we don’t sweat as much during the winter, we still lose a substantial amount of water daily. At a minimum, make sure to drink at least eight cups per day to keep your body operating at its best.

One bottle each of Earth Science's Green Tea & Chamomile Eye Makeup Remover (4 oz) and Herbal Tonic Mist (8 oz), displayed next to two freshly cut fennel bulbs.

Fennel doesn’t get enough love in our opinion, so we’re giving this plant lots of it on the blog this November! Fall isn’t just for cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice everything. It’s also the beginning of fennel season, and its airy yellow tops are covering the coastal bluffs near Earth Science’s southern California office.

An herb with family members like dill, caraway, cumin and anise, fennel has long been used in recipes for everything from baked sweets to marinades, soups and sauces, using both its stalks in some dishes as well as its seeds to spice up others.

Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) fruit extract is an ingredient in our gentle eye makeup remover and refreshing Herbal Tonic Mist. But what’s fennel fruit, you ask? The small pieces of the plant, commonly called fennel seeds, which are actually its dried fruits.

We’ve selected fennel fruit extract as one of Earth Science’s skincare ingredients because of its wonderful anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties. It has the ability to soothe and moisturize dry or irritated skin conditions, making it a perfect addition to these paraben-free, cruelty-free and vegan products:

  • Our fragrance-free Chamomile & Green Tea Makeup Remover also features fennel fruit, bilberry and eyebright extracts. This effective herbal formula purifies and refreshes skin while removing makeup. Non-irritating, no artificial colors and no oily residue!
  • Our ultra-pure Herbal Tonic Mist freshens, cools and energizes skin with fennel fruit extract as well as those of raspberry leaf, aloe vera, calendula, sea kelp, chamomile and comfrey. Special “ultra-moisturizers” such as panthenol and hyaluronic acid hydrate and improve skin’s appearance and protect it from the drying effects of the sun.

With a light anise flavor, this herb is also a tasty addition to salads and casseroles. Discover some of these fennel-filled recipes for serving at your dinner table on Thanksgiving:

Our hearts have been heavy for all those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. While the end of the 2017 hurricane season is nearing, we know recovery efforts in the path of their destruction will continue to go on for months.

At Earth Science, we try to fuse social and environmental responsibility into the core of our business. In considering how we could help hurricane victims as they begin to rebuild their lives, we decided to partner with Good360, a global leader in product philanthropy and purposeful giving. Good360 works with recovery agencies and nonprofits to determine exactly what families and individuals need and then provides them with products donated by companies. They’re helping us deliver $100,000 worth of basic essential hygiene items—shampoo and conditioner—to the people of southern Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irma!

If you’re an animal lover, another great organization to have on your radar is Best Friends Animal Society. We’ve also committed to support our friends at this nonprofit in their disaster response efforts, which have been phenomenal! Their work in Texas and Florida has included rescuing stranded animals, helping reunite families with lost pets, delivering supplies to hard-hit animal shelters, and transporting displaced shelter pets. In Texas alone, they’ve already helped more than 1,600 animals in the Houston area and served more than 10,000 pounds of food to hungry pets.

Our thoughts remain with the communities impacted by these disasters. We invite you to join us in our commitment to helping them as they recover and rebuild.
